Do geraniums like sun or shade?

Most of the genus of over 400 species of geraniums need a spot in full sun to thrive and produce abundant blooms.

They are known for their sun-loving nature and will perform best when they receive at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. In areas with very hot summers, some afternoon shade may be beneficial to protect them from intense midday sun.

However, geraniums can tolerate some light shade, especially in regions with scorching summers. If you live in a particularly hot or sunny climate, providing them with a bit of afternoon shade can help prevent the plants from becoming stressed or scorched. In contrast, if you place them in too much shade, they may become leggy and produce fewer flowers.

While geraniums prefer full sun, they can tolerate some shade, especially in hot climates, as long as they still receive a significant amount of sunlight during the day.
